Tertiary Educations in Ghana

 BRIEF HISTORY OF UEW.
                                                              INTRODUCTION
The University College was established in 1992, with bias in teaching and education. In fact, its primary mission is to train teachers and upgrade their competency. It is coeducational and offers competitive programmes in diverse fields. Even though it is located at Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana, it has campuses at Mampong and in Kumasi, both in the Ashanti Region. This institution also admits a large number of basic school teachers at Distance Learners to its 3 – Year Diploma in Basic Education. It has residential facilities on campus for most students and lecturers, however, a large percentage and non – residential. In 2004, about 30% of students are residential and 70% non resident. Total student population is about 12,919 in 2004 and full time enrollment is 9,939.
Diploma in Basic Education by distance education is 5,398. In 2004, application for full time admission is 7,310, out of which 5,921 qualified for full time admission, with 2,962 being offered admission and 2,760 being enrolled. Those enrolled are made up of 1,801 males and 959 females. Teaching staff as at 1st May, 2004 is 240 and non – teaching staff at the same period is 1,232. Even though its emphasis is shifting towards recruiting its students form second cycle institutions such as the Senior Secondary Schools, this University is famous for assisting many trained teachers to acquire tertiary education and also for its education and also for its educational oriented programmes.
