Polytechnics In Ghana
POLYTECHNICS
In line with the drastic educational
reforms that Ghana undertook in the 1990’s the government decided to establish
a Polytechnic in each of the ten regional capitals. These institutions are
supposed to fill the gap in the field of highly qualified middle level
manpower. All the Polytechnics have been granted tertiary status and are
running full time and non – tertiary programmes in various fields.
Their programmes are highly competitive
and their products are well recognized in both the academic and industrial
arena. Their key attraction is their well – developed part – time courses,
which allow many full time workers to participate and acquire addition skills
without sacrificing productivity at their work places.
A key characteristic of all Polytechnic
in Ghana is that they are all state owned and hence operate similar policies.
Also with the few exception of a few noticeable differences, the courses run,
admission requirements and cost structure are generally similar. Thus in order
to avoid repetitions, information have been compressed in certain cases in
order to get the full picture of what pertains in all the Ghanaian
polytechnics, therefore it is advisable to read the entire chapter on
Polytechnic since what is compressed in one is dilated on fully in others.
Currently, the Polytechnics generally have limited boarding facilities for
students and lectures, however, all the Polytechnics in the country are on
course in terms of achieving the national objectives.
